A Guide to Bathroom Zones

A Guide to Bathroom Zones

The IET 17th Edition BS7671:2008 wiring regulations stipulate that electrical equipment must only be used in certain “zones” of a bathroom as defined by their IP rating. An IP rating for an electrical product indicates its level of protection from the ingress of foreign objects or water. The bathroom zones are designated by their distance from showers, baths, sinks and any other washing device that splashes water. The regulation does not apply to emergency facilities, e.g. emergency showers used in industrial areas or laboratories.

To easily decipher where an electrical product can be placed in a bathroom, a diagram is used to show the zones and distances from these zones that should be adhered to, ensuring the safe installation and operation of electrical devices in a wet environment.

Zonal Descriptions

Zone 0

The interior of the bath tub or shower basin.

For showers without a basin, the height of the Zone is 0.10m and its surface extent has the same horizontal extent as Zone 1.

Min IP rating: IPX7

Lighting must be SELV (12V max)

Zone 1

An area the width of the shower or bath tub and 2.25m high from the finished floor. (See diagram). This includes the vertical plane of the bath or shower (3 dimensional area) and any point within 1.2m from the centre point of the fixed water outlet on the wall or ceiling for showers without a basin.

Zone 1 does not include Zone 0.

The space beneath a bath or shower basin is considered Zone 1. If the space beneath the bath tub or shower basin is only accessible with a tool, it is considered to be outside of the Zones.

Min IP rating: IPX4

If there is a possibility of water jets being used for cleaning in this area a minimum of IPX5 is required.

Zone 2

The surrounding area outside of a bath or shower in all directions to a distance of 0.6m from the border of Zone 1.

Min IP rating: IPX4

If there is a possibility of water jets being used for cleaning in this area a minimum of IPX5 is required.

Beyond the Zones

Outside of the zones, the standard BS7671:2008 regulations apply unless water jets are used for cleaning purposes.
